My last standing stone of the weekend. Carreg Wen sits high up on the western edge of Hafren Forest; not far from the source of the River Severn. Its setting and the far reaching views east are revived amidst the devastation of the recently cleared forest - an impressive lump of rock with a significant seam of quartz on one side - which gives it its name. The age old question pops into my head again - why here? It’s not the highest point in the vicinity, and with the source of the Severn so close, I’m left wondering if there is a connection. 4/4 • #bikepacking #bearbonesbikepacking #wildcatgear #ridefarridefree

All tracks lead somewhere, even the dead end ones. If it wasn’t for the search for the standing stone in the previous image, I doubt I would’ve ridden up here at all, because the track doesn’t go anywhere. But it was a delight to find a line of shallow natural pools hanging high on the mountain, concealed behind a rocky ridge. 3/4 • #bikepacking #bearbonesbikepacking #wildcatgear #ridefarridefree
